For the block and tackle I would use yacht braid. Not only is it pretty, but it won't break...

Can I expect to remedy the twist by stretching the line against the twist, or have I sufficient grounds for a refund, doyouthink?Attachment 46096
If you don't like the line in it, replace it. The Yacht braid, or something similar in hemp will likely fix your concern there. I have one of those (used in this area to suspend deer for field prep) that I've used to get several water heaters in and out of the attic of this house. I've not found the twisted nylon cord a problem, but YMMV! Bought a 1/4-ton chain hoist last time, since I couldn't find the game hoist, and the new water heater was much smaller than when I first did this. It's probably going to wind up in the shop one of these days. Which I why I keep following the hoist discussions...

The first time I did this job, it was a 50 gallon water heater tank. Been going with progressively smaller heaters over the 27 years I've been here.
