    While that's something a body might use in a pinch, commercial versions are much more secure (some with spring loaded collars as well as magnetic bit holders) — and waaay less fumble to use. Personally, I'd have to pinch myself for not just grabbing the right bit holder.

    I'm amazed not to see any discussion of Reed & Prince screws or screw drivers as a competitor for Phillips screws and screwdrivers. Back when I went to school to be a fighter jet mechanic, early in 1974, that was about it for cross-point screws and drivers. I see they're now referred to as Frearson screws & screwdrivers, but that wasn't so then. Much superior to Phillips screws, and the company that bought and uses the name now advertises that 49% of the screws used in WWII aircraft were Reed and Prince.

    wasn't there some sort of marketing agreement reached where Phillips "won" the USA market and other markets got other things like square drive.

    Henry Ford liked and used Robertson in his Canadian factory, but couldn't get the rights to it so he went with the cursed Phillips. The detailed history is here...
