Many times I wished I had something to locate the edge of a small piece vertically in the milling machine vise, if a part isn’t large enough to locate itself from a previously machined edge on the bottom of the vise or parallels then you have to take other measures to insure squareness of your part.
I came up with this idea of an offset squaring devise, something that had a thin blade that would fit right into the milling machine vise so I could rest my part up against the blades edge therefore squaring my part, to give an example of how to use this tool just think of standing a pieceof 1/4" X 1/4” square steel on its end 4” long, it’s not going to be vertical just sitting on its end even if you machined that end, it doesn’t have enough surface area to locate itself, it still needs a little help.
This tool was made in three pieces sandwiched together with three 1/4"dowel pins and three 1/4"socket head cap screws, it was ground all over before assembly then put together and just the critical surfaces reground.
I have included some photos of the tools assembly along with photos of using the tool.
As always thanks for looking and happy machining
