Medical errors are not complications of medical and surgical care. It is what it is: Medical Errors! After heart diseases and cancer, medical errors are the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. A study at John Hopkins in 2016 revealed that an average of 250,000 people die in the U.S. because of medical mistakes each year.

Strange statistics. According to the CDC the main cause is poisoning, followed by firearms, followed by traffic accidents. Fine if you consider taking an overdose or being murdered as non-accidental.

I recently sent a man to the ER stating my concern to the Doc there that, given his history and exam, my patient likely had an epidural abscess. Definitive diagnosis is by MRI. The ER Doc squoze the man's neck a couple times and said it's just a muscle spasm, stating in his medical note my concern was in error. I sent the patient to another hospital. MR was done, and the abscess was confirmed. The next day, surgeons did a decompression and fusion surgery on his neck. Epidural abscesses are fast growing and can lead to paralysis or death. This was a medical error.
