The rest of the table legs was burned, keeping me warm, pre-heating steel and providing me with charcoal.
They’re beech, with ash handles.
The piece on the left looks a bit like a shipwright’s caulking mallet. It’s not, of course. One of those would be heavier, the best sort being of lignum vitae, with iron or brass hoops, and slits through the eye, so it could be “tuned” . I don’t know whether they were actually tuned to a given note, but it was done by knocking the hoops back towards the hammer eye. I haven’t seen it done but would like to know how it handles with the long head. I think I shall just experiment, by wrapping some lead round it, to simulate the weight. .
The square mallet on the right is also an experiment, the eye drilled through,along the line of the diagonal. It’s a very light mallet. The handle broke off my favourite forging hammer so its existence has been extended!
