Until I introduced them to gas shielded flux cored mig welding, the guys in the company I was with in Kuwait all just used dark shades to stick weld with. Once they tried some real welding wearing my Speed glass autodarkening helmet they all wanted a helmet that would automatically darken. I never caught another guy welding without a helmet

I picked up an auto darkening helmet few years ago. The best thing I have ever used when I'm welding. And all I use is flux core. So much of what I do is outside there is little advantage in trying to work with shielding gas.

Those helmets have batteries in addition to the "solar" panel. Not all are replaceable. I found that out but fortunately was able to buy a new assembly online that fit the helmet and uses CR2032 replaceable batteries.

If the one I have now has a battery in it I've never found it. It has functioned flawlessly now for nearly 6 years and if I need it tomorrow and it fails to work then I have a helmet with a #10 shade as a back up. I would just have to relearn to nod my head each time I struck an arc until I could find another auto dark that I like.

probably soldered to the board inside. A good lithium battery is good for 10 years or so.

Autodark helmets are great and all...but wth is this guy doing?! Newspaper to cover his skin but nothing to shield his eyes? And using the torch as a hammer.

He is looking through multiple layers of newspaper to shield his eyes. It is better than dark sunglasses as the UV radiation that buggers up your retina is mostly blocked by the layers of newspaper. And you are basically welding whilst seeing a shadow of what is going on in the weld area.

I have seen guys that welded with nothing, with those cheesey hold up shields and with dark glasses. People are invincible until they are not.

I thought much the same. Apparently eyes have some value, however skin versus intense UV rays has little if any protection.
