Looks like he got in too big of a hurry. He should have waited for the mortar to set before he put any lateral pressure on it. No load on the top of the wall so no strength laterally. I've always said I'll never burn to death in a block walled structure. Almost anything with some heft can be used to beat a hole in the middle of a block wall. Unless its concrete filled of course! Then I'd be toast!
