    New here,

I'm looking forward to enjoying this forum.

My name is Bob and I have a tool addiction, I need help......I guess.

I have just acquired a new to me 16" South Bend lathe. Cutting metal will be new to me, I am used to pounding it into submission. The forge will get a brake.
The lathe came with no tooling and only one usable chuck. So I will need to make tooling for it. So I will be looking for ideas.

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

    Welcome!

The bad news is that we're not likely to help cure your addiction. The good news is that we're world-class enablers!

Let's see some pics of the new lathe…

I kind of expected to find enablers.

The first things on the agenda are to reassemble the Reversing switch and test it. I have already made a new mount and relocated it. It was broken off the lathe and the main shaft in the switch was worn out. I had to weld some extension on it and file to fit. While I was modifying the new mount that I made I blew a fuse and now it pops a fuse every time I put power to the motor.

The next is to locate a back plate for a 9 inch 3 jaw chuck that I got with it. The chuck has a BP that will not mate up with the 2 3/8 X 6 TPI male threads on the spindle. So far I've been unable to locate one that wil fit both the chuck and the lathe. I checked with the mfg of the chuck and they quoted a price that was more than I paid for the lathe. I may end up making one or modifying one. But first I have to learn how to cut threads.

Well it's a project and should keep me off the streets for a while. I have already thought about getting some sort of vertical mill. I need to figure out a way to put some of the milling cutters my dad left me.
