    I remember needle ice on winter mornings when a wet spot of ground would freeze, and the needles would poke up in a cluster. I had no idea that could happen on a body of water, though. I wonder how it forms and whether it's a precursor to solid ice.

    It looked like the needles grew as the slushy ice was disturbed by the shovel. by breaking up the surface and exposing more water to fridged air.

    One rare breakup on a large nearby lake the wind pushed the ice to one shore, where ice floes climbed atop one another being pushed by the ice pack, making a mound 30 feet high and encroaching the shore. a very rare occurrence.
