I wanted something to mull green sand, that is mix up the kind of sand you use for aluminium casting. I had an old washing machine, and thought I may as well try and make something a bit more versatile...
The project uses the frame and bearings of the washing machine, and a rotating table is made from scrap ply to go on top. The inside of the old machine gets shelves for storage.
The original universal motor is controlled with closed loop PID system on an Arduino microcontroller. This allows constant speed under varying loads.
It uses a salvaged timer from a microwave, so that I can set it mulling sand for a while while I do other things. This was an easy win - I just had to extend the keypad cable and it was good.
