    The marvel is that it can be detected at all. It interacts only via the weak force and gravity. It has virtually no mass so gravity isn't a significant affecter and the weak force, as the name suggests, has a very short range.

    It passes through most things with no interaction at all. Direct detection is almost impossible so large volumes of material must be monitored for evidence of an observable interaction. This accounts for the large size of the detector.
