Moving an apartment building down a river. First GIF will autoplay; click the play button on the second one to play it. Anyone know what (or where, or why) is going on here?

Jon, funny thing is, that looks like the top 5 floors of the typical Chinese Apt tower! So how would you get just the top floors'off' and onto a barge... or is it the latest in Chinese houseboats? The reason I say that is that the bottom floor looks exactly as the ones above, and most building's ground floor would be different, like with shops or such....stay tuned...You've got my curiosity going, after having just seen river and bridge scenes like this on the Yangtze in August...Cheers

It is indeed in Chongqing under the Yangtze half of the Twin Rivers bridge. We boarded our Yangtze Explorer ship in Yichang (3 Gorges Dam with amazing shiplift!) and disembarked in Chongqing right under the bridge!! An amazing place....

A five-story "#building" was spotted cruising along the #Yangtze River in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Saturday. The "building" was actually a floating restaurant. Authorities said the restaurant needed to relocate due to policies. Since it had no power, it needed to be pushed forward by a pair of boats to its new location.

Good find Frank! Funny, my first thought was just that, but from the distance, it looked like an actual bricks and mortar building...but still, would it be fair to say that our inability to do the same in the western world is partly to do with a lack of commitment, and mostly with the unwillingness to spend the dosh...and mostly because of not having a ready workforce that can be paid in funny money...thanks for that and cheers.

Its done more than you might think but not as regular as it was 3 or 4 decades ago. And not usually on a scale as has been done else where.
The road where I lived when I was young was gravel for a long time then they finally paved it and made it a Farm to market road. I remember once when it was about half completed seeing a large 2 story house being moved along it. it was wide enough that the main beams were set as wide apart as the road was wide where it was paved meaning that half of the tires were run well off of the sides in the dirt. the Road was only about 7 miles long but it took almost a week to go from 1 end to the other because they had to build up the shoulders all along the way but we wound up with a much better FM road afterwards because of the wider shoulders

I saw a documentary a few years ago about an USA company that made floating 'Dock Houses' which were built in a factory, trucked some 200 miles to be launched then towed up or down the East coast to their final destination. These were 4-5 story mansions and the engineering and logistics involved was truly amazing stuff.
