This guy was standing idle glancing at papers in his hands and unaware of the coming truck from behind. Has he cheated death?
more likely the angle of death was not looking for him or it was not his time to go if you believe in that sort of thing.
Another way to look at it was just pure blind luck if there is such a thing

It was one of his 'slippahs'...tourists here call them 'flip-flops'. Not recommended footwear for motorbikes.
