    Modular naval artillery concept - photo

    The Modular Naval Artillery Concept (MONARC) program of the German defense industry studied the feasibility of mounting self-propelled artillery turrets to naval vessels.

    IF I recall correctly the gun on those ships is of Swedish design and was designed for naval and coastal defense. It was selected because it's a rapid reload and can fire a wide range of shell types. It was designed from the beginning with stabilization, range, speedy rate of fire, accuracy and was a proven system.
    But it is a smaller caliber than what the Germans were experimenting with. They were trying to use a proven weapon system and evaluate its effectiveness in a marine setting.
