Despite being a fairly new woodworker, I always try to improve my skills and challenge myself.
I believe I am a pioneer of this modern desk or office table minimalist design.
I purposely designed this working desk or the office table, WITHOUT the base or apron.
My design features the double blind shouldered sliding dovetail for the stretchers, that are not glued to the table top, hence allow the wood seasonal movement i.e. expansion (wet season) and contraction (draught).
The dovetailed stretchers are glued only to one side of the table. The end of the stretchers can slide in and out of the recess in the wide table legs (4x4 inches posts rather).
The legs are connected to the table top using the through mortise and tenon wedged joints. Additionally the legs-table glue up is using the strong epoxy resin, that tightly fills the joint, and makes the legs+table top feel like they were made out of a single piece of material.
This modern minimalist work desk design is my first prototype, and a proof of concept. I now know this design is possible / doable, and the table is more sturdy than I expected. It has zero play / wobble / movement. This piece of the furniture feels as solid as a rock.
I made a mistake by choosing the wedges wood to be too soft, comparing to the legs, and I couldn't fully drive them into the wedge slots. The wedge slots are ended with the end holes, to prevent the legs material from splitting, as the wedges are hammered into the slots.
The next time, I will have to carefully select the wedges material to match the hardness and stiffness of the material being wedged.
I "fixed" the wedges failure, by pouring the epoxy resin to fill the entire table-legs joinery, and it worked like a charm.
In my future project, I'll make the coffee table based on the same design and concept, and I will make sure the wedges can be fully driven in.
PS
I look up to the I****ani Furniture, whom I mentioned in my video, while describing the difference between his sliding dovetail and mine. My design is much harder to implement, as it requires sliding the stretcher PRIOR to the glue up, and making sure they wouldn't be glued to the dovetailed slide / shoulder, to allow future seasonal movement of the wood.
I****ani Furniture leaves the sliding dovetail opening on one side of his table top edge, and then he closes it with the plug, which fits perfectly the left opening / entry. There is absolutely nothing wrong about I****ani sliding dovetail, I simply was trying to see if it was even possible to hide the ends of the stretchers, and I have proven my idea to be working (however it is not an easy one).
I take my hat off to Mr I****ani and I hope he would look at my idea with an open positive mind.
It would be interesting to see how Mr I****ani or Rob Cosman (who raised an interest in my joinery idea) implement my design, at their master skills level.
I hope you like my working desk design as much as I do.
Please try it yourself and share your build video.
Thank you!
