Live steam model railroading is an exciting and creative branch of the model engineering tree. Many of these locomotives are faithful copies of their prototypes and duplicate their operational features. Don't let their smaller size fool you; they can pull deceptively large loads, just as their prototypes did.

Chris Holland, of Canada, spent 28 years and 17,000 hours building this model of a UP Challenger, an articulated 4-6-6-4 heavy hauler.

Those guys usually have a get-together every month or two and encourage anyone that's interested to attend. My wife and I went to this guy's house with a track in the yard. He was so nice that he invited us to eat lunch with them. Excellent food with fresh vegetables from his garden. He let me drive his locomotive with my wife riding. I asked him how fast it would go, and he guessed about 60 MPH. It was a unique experience. He showed me his shop too. That was probably about 40 years ago. I have a couple of pictures somewhere of us riding. If I find them, I will post them.
