Now that would be a hell of an award, tool of the year, but that does sound good, maybe you should mention that to Jon!!
Plenty of precision is built into the lathe, so far I have maintained .0003" in flat, square and parallel and I will continue to maintain that precision throughout the project, like I said it's going to take a couple more months to complete, I'll post a little more in about a month, I'm working on the carriage now.

    Thanks for your comments JR

The lathe is coming together slowly, not in a hurry, so far everything is within .0003" of being perfectly flat, parellel and square, going to try and hold those tolerances throughout the build.

The digital measuring tools are a absolute must have, wouldn't trade them for nothing and they are absolutely perfect, I have an old Craftsman depth gage I bought new when I was 19, in fact I got the blocks out the other day and did a little adjusting on it, 2 of the stems were out .0004", I don't use it enough to buy digital, and I sure wouldn't buy a cheap Chinese made measuring tool just to have a digital measuring tool, it would have to be a Starrett or Mitutoyo.

    Thanks Paul

Thanks. Most likely i will ask something soon.
Now i need to make sturdy stands for those.

Lathe weights about 50kg and Mill about 65kg.
Both are quite small. But i think i get quite far with them.

Non fibrating base for the lathe seems to be a little challenge.
I think im going to make one with only necessary steel, and use congrete to bring weight and sturdiness.
Otherwise it will easily cost little too much, if made only from steel.

In a way that is sad because it looks like it will be a perfectly functional watch makers lathe or similar small machine. On the other hand it is already a masterpiece of art.

    Thanks Doug

Tools are are a struggle for most of us, especially if we don’t work directly in the machining industry. Personally I’ve yet to get any sort of mill and yes that is frustrating.

For stands I like welded steel for the frames. This even if I put a wood top on the frame. Of course this requires a welder and a good saw. The other option was n is lots of 2x4’s, 2x6’s, glue and construction screws.

Not bad. If your lathe is anything like mine (it is about the same weight) you will likely want an additional set of riser blocks. My lathe sat too close to the chip pan for my big hands.

Concrete can work if it is the expanding type! You can run into loose concrete in steel tubing if it shrinks too much.
Otherwise it will easily cost little too much, if made only from steel.
When making something heavy on purpose remember to build in a method of moving that object. I’m trying not saying this because things I made decades ago in my youth seem to be a lot harder to move these days in old age. Even stuff like furniture (a stereo center) can be an issue when it was built to n my teens and I’m now hitting sixty. Wheels are one solution but sometimes making it easy to slip a pallet jack or similar under is just as viable.

By the way as I get you will never move that heavy thing again doesn’t work. You eventually will want to change things up or clean behind.

    rossbotics,

I still have and use my original Srarrett 0-3" depth mike I bought new in 1968 and also six piece set of Mitutoyo outside micrometers bought in 1969. They are old but still very serviceable. One of these fine days I will splurge for a new 6"digital caliper.

    Hey Dick
Well I can't say the same about Mikes and calipers, I still have my Brown and Sharpe 0-4 Mikes that I have had since 1974 along with the Craftsman 0-3 depth mike, but I have been through 2 sets of 6" digital calipers and this is my 3rd one, I only have one 0-1 Mitutoyo Digital Mike, thinking about getting a 1-2 digital mike although it wouldn't get used much besides they are expensive.

Splurge and get yourself a Mitutoyo Digital Caliper, you'll be glad you did.
