I used to scribe lines with a somewhat makeshift device with an old needle file attached to some round rod and a base adjusted by loosening a bolt, trouble was getting it the right height. The need eventually arose for something better. Made this a while back before I had a milling machine, milled slots on the lathe, material held in the toolpost. Cutter is 1/8 hss, ruler is glued on.
