My Raglan vertical miller has a spindle with a 2MT for the chuck and I've been concerned for some time about having to clout the top of the drawbar to release the chuck.
There seemed to be no alternative way and yet I hated hammering it, as I imagined the taper roller bearings could be brinelling over time.
After pondering, I realised that the top bearing pre-load collar had two radial holes for adjusting it and these were the key to solving the problem.
After raiding the 'may be useful someday' scrap bin, I fashioned a simple puller which works a treat and has proved to be as convenient as reaching for a hammer.
In use, the drawbar is unwound a couple of turns and the puller is positioned on top of the spindle. The two hardened pins then engage with the holes in the collar after the arms are released by spring pressure. I arranged for 2mm screws to sit inside the springs - they limit the travel of the arms and stop the pins swivellng out of the body of the puller.
A turn or two of the handle and the taper releases like magic.
