    WOW! Almost crashed where the people were swimming! I wonder if they were trying to get into shallower water so they didn't have to swim too far or maybe so they could recover the helo?

    Crazy idea flying a helo into that environment. Too many obstacles. I hope he was able to keep his license after that.

    What did the pilot hit?
    I have a 1972 Land Rover Series III Truck Cab/Pick-Up and a 1962 Land Rover Series 2a Carawagon Camper.

    I didn't see anything. Maybe it experienced a failure of the engine or a gearbox.

    This happened some time ago in Auckland New Zealand. If I remember correctly, the helicopter was lifting the tower in the left of the picture. The helicopter hook failed to release due to a malfunction. The helicopter hovered lower so the ground crew could release the cable. I understand that the lifting cable had sufficient length to carry out this manoeuvre. Unfortunately the ground crew in their attempt to release the cable from the hook, pulled the cable into the rotor system.
    I might also add that the pilot was an experienced operator.
    As usual in these types of accidents, its always the unexpected that gets us.
