Massive steel mill electric motors - photo
-
I worked in a major steel mill for 15 years. Many of these are used to generate DC volts.Over head cranes, rolling mill motors. AC can be a electrocution threat . DC is still dangerous, but not to the extent AC. Thousands of relays, snapping. The only place in the mill that was spotless.

Interesting. What you say makes sense. At first, i puzzled over the five large motor units clustered togethered (along with, perhaps, 10k sq ft of switch gear and controls in the background). Likely, this is an old mill installation, built before variable frequency drives were commonplace. In the town I grew up in, there was a very large steel mill complex. In the neighborhoods surrounding the mills, the streets, sidewalks, grass, houses and cars *everything* was covered with a light brown haze from the mills.
That area was designated a Federal Superfund site in the early eighties.
Good times.
