The dog probably went out and did it again the next day.

An aquatence of mine tried to rescue his dog in thre same situation. He went through the ice and current swept him under the ice and drowned. Dog got out somehow. This is a very dangerous situation and without proper equipment and training it is best not attempted. Note the rescuer was likely a member of a fire dept ice rescue team with the associated backup. Every other year or so someone in Edmonton losses their life in a misguided attempt to rescue their dog. Best to keep dog on leash when close to open water areas on otherwise frozen river or pond
