I don't think people really wear wooden cowboy hats. Even though I live in the American West, maybe I just lack the cultural exposure to have ever seen one worn. Or, I have seen them, but they were so well-made that I confused them for non-wooden cowboy hats.
One bonus is that they look challenging to make, using a light source for turning, and requiring some bending. And even if you can't wear one, you can display it on your head.
