The Sherline 4400 is a nice precision lathe. Most of it is hi grade aluminum. The Z axis ways are steel and magnetic so you can put your indicator base or chip shield on it. However I like to use the head stock for my indicator base and chip shield.
I had an old steel bracket already bent in my "junk box" so half of the part was already made. Added a piece of aluminum for the base and machined a recess in it for the Sherline motor mount, added a thru-hole in the base for the motor mounting bracket allen cap screw (replaced motor mount screw with a longer one) and tapped an 8-32 hole in the base for securing the bracket. Walla, a shelf that sits over the headstock and now I can mount my accessories there.
Working good so far.
Cheers, JR
