All my woodworking and carving chisels are safely stored in the garage but I like to keep a few cheapies that I resharpened at my crowded indoor deskside work table. To save room I have them stored vertically in a tin can. But as this picture...
shows, the exposed sharp edges are a real threat to anyone reaching for a nearby tool. I decided that sheaths were needed, not so much to protect the chisels but to protect me from them. I had great success with my previous magnetic sheath...
Open-sided magnetic sheath
so I decided to do the same here. Using bits of scrap wood and wood glue I made a sheath to fit each chisel. A shallow 3/16" hole provided a place to glue a tiny super magnet...
All better and safer now...
Aside: Holding those tiny magnets to insert them into the slightly undersized holes was difficult. I discovered that a good technique was to stick them to the end of a 3/16" pin punch. This provided a good "handle" as well as something to use to tap them into the tight hole.
