    Lucris SteelRuleDie/Enbossing/Letterpress Press

    This is a new toy I just got off Craigslist (OK - it was $100 with a table for it - SHAZAM!)

    I'm a high-end portrait artist and I have just re-branded myself using my signature for ALL Of my artwork (I also do furniture from found fragments and other art).

    To use my signature effectively, I wanted to make business cards and stationery that feature it.

    I had some dies made at Owosso (on the web) to deboss my business cards and stationery. (DEbossing is where the impression stands UP, EMbossing is where it is recessed)

    Cool toy! I have many more things in mind for it...

    Oh, yeah! I'm a fanatic about quick change tooling (SMED = single minute exchange of dies) so I set this up so I can swap out fences very quickly.
    And, the MDF baseplate lifts off off the press base and can be swapped out in under 30- seconds with another embossing die (or debossing die, or steel rule die... etc.)

    Cheers!

    Charles

    Here's a pic of the card itself (during prototyping, so the outline of the die is being embossed as well - oops!)

    That's pretty neat man. How do you go about making the stamps for different projects?

    Owosso makes the dies - you send them 600dpi artwork and they do it all.

    I have a shear so I cut strips of .040" aluminum sheet and use super-glue to stack them up to make the upper and lower 'die blocks' that keep the positive and the counter aligned.

    According to Google the opposite is true

    I was a printer for over 30 years and Phil is correct. And printing done with an engraved die is (or was) called "engraved printing" even though the result is raised printing. That comment is for those who still recieve mailed invitations from your friends on the social register.

    Well, huh!

    Now I know!

    And, it goes on the looooong list of things I've done backwards all my life.
    :-)

    The correct wording is now well and truly debossed into my mind.

    Thanks!

    An easy mnemonic...

    DEbossed = DEpressed
    EMbossed = EMerging

    Charles - feel free to add a link to your website in your forum signature so that you'll get more traffic to your site. Or all of your websites if you like.

    RedirectedMaterials.com is interesting; really unique stuff with many of the industrial and mechanical aesthetics that we like around here. Sometimes people try to combine those styles and their work ends up looking hodgepodge or too steampunky or metal-lawn-art-ish. Yours has a cleaner integrated look, even across widely varying components.

    But I think PositionAll.com is my favorite. Is that build out of the design stage yet?
