There are a lot of videos of these long dump trucks tipping over. The side blowing out on this one probably saved the tractor and trailer chassis from much damage.

is it me, but it appears as though the tail gate did not open until the side flexed and started to blow out..?

The driver should driven forward while it was dumping.
Too far back, tail gate was blocked closed by the stuff on the ground. The truck probably needed to be retired anyway.
