Lima made the first AWD vehicles. TShay-design locos drove all of the wheels under the loco, and some of Lima's even drove the wheels under the tender. The sound they make is unique, and IMHO, the most soothing steam engine of them all.

But there were many who would say it ain't a true locomotive without those 72" drive wheels.
Just like the first drill rig I built I designed in a pair of semi-truck brake chambers with the spring parking brake to activate the brake bands on the draw-works and used a wabco valve instead of the 6 ft long brake leaver. The first words out of the driller's mouth were it ain't oilfield I'm out of here. Now days many of the draw-works use air to activate the brakes. My second rig I incorporated water cooled disk brakes with huge 6 puck hydraulic calipers like I had seen used on the elevators of deep shaft mines The haters and doubters had a lot to say about them, but they are common on rigs now. A lot has happened since I was 27
