    Lightbulb leaf spring pick tool

I kept eyeing this ole leaf spring laying in the junk pile and decided it was time to use this for making a pick. Used the natural curve of the spring and sharpened one end of it to a pin point and left the other end to use as it was but sharpened it to a knife edge. I took a pipe and cut it in two, heated it and formed it to fit the axe handle and welded it back together. I had a roll of heat shrink tubing laying around and shrunk it around the handle for a little protection fr om miss hits which I do well at times. This tool probably wont get used much but it makes a good conversation piece just hanging in the shop with all of my other contraptions. My kids will just love me when they go through the junk I leave behind whenever I go to to meet my maker. Maybe there will be a junk yard or two for me to rummage through.Attachment 25122leaf spring pick tool-cabbage-scale-hammer-043.jpg

OK definitely not made for busting through hard sand stone or lime stone but there are times when breaking up hard clay coils that a lightweight thinly profiled pick could come in handy

How timely! I was just going through my resources (the wife call it my junk pile.... but would you expect anything else?) and was about to consign an old leaf spring to the metal scrap yard (you know, to get money to buy different pieces of scrap). I have the genuine article but after swinging it for extended periods I can see a definite advantage to your lightweight profile. If its too thin and flexy, I'll just weld a reinforcement plate part way down the inside of one end and see how that goes.

    Thanks!!
