    Thanks Tony, interesting, I'm now wiser. Leaves on a single plant vary so much in size that I'm surprised this measurement is useful in practice.

    you will find that there is a standard deviation being applied at "full growth", and measuring the leave area will show if that is moving, and what stages the plant is at.

    Similar method used to measure areas of other flat products; in summer 1976, after graduating HS, I worked in a local tannery. One guy's job was to send tanned hides thru a device which measured the area of the irregular hides by measuring the hide as strips, each strip maybe an inch wide, then totaling the strips. As the hide went thru the machine, a series of parallel wheel above the leather turned only as long as the leather was under it. All the wheels totaled together was the square footage of the hide.

    In essence, simple mathematical integration by mechanical means.

    The company that I worked for in the 70's made many of the components in those Leaf Area measuring machines.
    Many, many hours spent turning the aluminum rollers (certain ones were "crowned") , making the front and rear aluminum plates; this being done manually before our company acquired CNC equipment.
    Once we had invested in a CNC mill, the sensor sub-assembly parts were made out of solid aluminum stock. They were tapped #2-56 for the covers.
    This sub-assembly could be used independently of the table-top version in the video.
    To see the sub-assembly, Search;

    Very demanding work; but as a customer, LICOR was a very good company to do business with.
