    Trust me, They aren't staffs or batons, they are collapsible covers, common on hydraulic rods too. Checking, I found all sold as such are just being "re-purposed" by a clever marketing description. I know them as flat helical coils, used in various machinery.
    The spring motor of a tape measure are wound from inside though......I'd believe their tendency would be to wind off instead of remaining collapsed, and lack sufficient width to contain themselves IF extended any decent amount.

    What's the inside diameter Steve? my leadscrew is 22mm. Add 10% GST for Au buyers but with free postage they are a bargain &I've ordered two. Thanks for the idea, well spotted.
