how would you use the threading dial ?
Unless your using a GRINDING attachment on the lathe, then why bother with leadscrew covers AT ALL ?
Seems to be a waste of time making them, so what does steel, brass, or even wood-dust do to the leadscrews?
The only improvement to His design I could do, is to cut a nylon washer while He was turning the couplers to put on each end to better hold the saran wrap and act as a bushing at the ends! Other than that I might be looking into making one my self, as I do not cut threads on my 12x36 Atlas and I hate to turn wood, with all the oiled surface's and all!
Simply pull the spring back to rest behind the dial, you'll lose a bit of protection but that part of the leadscrew doesn't get much swarf anyway. I have a dial but don't use it, I get less failures with the always engaged method, cheersOriginally Posted by metal2u

Good point but seeing "real" lathes nowadays all seem to have covers there must be something to it. I tend to use my tool post grinder quite a bit so I'm ready for anything, cheers "Pin It")

Hey skibo, did think about putting washers on other ends but they don't move so I didn't think it nessesary , cheers
I've just ordered smaller springs, 20 od, 1mm thick, to reduce bowing. And rather than press washers on the inside, attach on the outside diameter. The reason I chose 25mm springs in the first place was to have enough clearance to mount washers inside. This I feel will work better & neater, wish I thought of this earlier... Oh well haha
