Christophe and Paul are correct.
Setting a zero relative of tooling, not where engraved marks indicate, is a real time and material saver. Example given with Morse taper adapters is perfect example, not to mention placement of factory markings are totally inconsistent; some are flush and others protrude from the casting. No agreement I know has ever been hinted at between manufacturers, of marking and where taper ejects.
