In the class I'm taking, one of the first videos they show has a guy working on a lathe a bit bigger than the one in this video, and the guy (not his shirt, his whole upper body) gets dragged into the lathe and wrapped around the workpiece. Killed him rather messily. Makes a bit of an impression on most of the students.

A dramatic demonstration of why you should never mount a switch or a shelf for lathe accessories on the opposite side of the lathe. Yes, you're safe if the lathe isn't running but it takes only a momentary loss of concentration to reach for that cutting oil dispenser or tool post wrench when it is and then you're wound up in your work.

About 30 years ago a bloke I used to work with who basically lived in overalls and safety toe gumboots,(was banned from drag-racing because he refused to NOT wear his gumboots), was working early one morning modifying some blower parts and got his sleeve caught. He said the lathe was only turning slowly but he got dragged in and wrapped around the chuck. He did manage to hit the stop button on the way and his wife found him about 04:00hrs.
Many, many years of rehabilitation and still physically not good. Very experienced machinist who had grown up in a workshop.
How many machinists wear overalls?
