Good, robust idea. First I would buy an additional 50 teeth to get into the world of 5 and 10. Then a 45 to get 9.
Then I would modify the tip of the index to TWO positions: 1. down in the valley, 2. straddling the peak. It is like having 90, 96 and 100 teeth.
The gear I have on hand that I plan to make an indexing disk from is a leftover flexplate from a 2001 Nisan Xterra. With 120 teeth it will give me a division every 3 degrees, and with a locking pin the is notched and rotatable I can get a division every 1.5 degrees.
