Hi All
I made this multi stop for my Colchester Student to work in conjunction with the capstan attachment I bought on Ebay 15 years ago.
I thought it would be a quick project
The lathe already had a threaded hole in the saddle ready to accept the stop as these can be purchased direct from Colchester at silly money.
I had a Student manual which showed the exploded view of the original multi stop, so I decided to make one as close to the original as possible. I didn't have any dimensions so made it up as I went along. The stop its self was easy to make but what I didn't take in to consideration was the bed stop had to be different from the standard bed stop so the adjustable square depth stops could miss the top of the stop. (see photos)
The adjustable stop is operated by hand and the 5 positions are maintained by a spring and ball detent into a shallow countersink. When rotated the spring compresses and when at the next position the ball locates into the next countersink.
The bed stop was a complete remake as the original clamping arrangement didn't allow for machining suitable clearance for the long stops. The new stop was also fitted with two bed clamping screws. These were moved lower down to allow the required clearance to be machined off the top of the bed stop so the square stops could travel over the top of the bed stop.
Main 5 position multi stop which is bolted to lathe saddle
Both the bed stop and multi stop in position. I fitted two clamping bolts to the bed stop as the bolts were smaller then the original single locking bolt.
Showing clearance needed for the square screw stops to miss the top of bed stop.
As can be seen from the photos the bed stop has been well used over the last 15 years.
The good news is that I now have a multi stop and a new bed stop
