    eoverton,

This is a project that requires dedication, time and a desire to see see it through to the end. It is a lot of work but I had a lot of fun along the way and ended up with a very nice and usable machine tool that will last more than a lifetime if treated with respect. I would recommend starting out by setting a small goal at first, such as machining and assembling the basic framework first. (cast iron base and bar bed assembly). After meeting that first goal you can set another small goal and so on. It this manner you can build in stages and not let the project overwhelm you. Also, I used Thompson linear way shafting for the way bars. This is close tolerance material, is case hardened, highly finished and chrome plated and can be used as is for a smooth sliding set of way bars. You won't be sorry you used it! I also used 303 stainless for almost all exposed components as it will not rust. And above all have fun!

    eoverton,

One additional point I want to mention is that I made my Quorn one inch longer than the original design called for. If I was going to do it again I would make it 2" longer than originally designed. It seems some job will eventually appear that needs more room than what I have. Just a thought!

Thanks for those insights. I'm not in any hurry to get this done, and I've got lots of other concurrent projects. I'd thought about making a Quorn for years but assumed I'd never find the castings. And then I found the Martin ones and pounced for the reason that I didn't want to go on another search should Martin stop making them.

The tip about going 2" longer is a good one. That hadn't occurred to me, but now that you've said it, I can see a lot of advantages.

But this is why it pays to ask somebody who's been there before... ;-)

    ncollar,

    Hi Nelson,
Thanks for adding the info on the 5C tool holder. I had forgotten all about that casting being available.

I would love to obtain the plans / drawings for this item. It is by far the best I've seen.

    HUMARIA,

I did finally figure out how to link to my plans. It took me awhile to learn but I did it. When I submit a set of plans for sale I am given the link and I am free to link to them at will by copy and paste.
    Works for me!

    H0$$,

The plans are sold by Martin Model and pattern. Google them for their web address. There is also a paperback book they have available which has the plans within.
    I hope this helps.

Gday Dick, you have done a beautiful job building this Quorn tool and cutter grinder, I have just been given one that’s about 3/4 finished, the work that has been done so far looks to be done very well, I’m really looking forward to getting it finished but after reading quite a lot of the plans the spindle does have me a little worried, thanks for sharing your build, looks beautiful, cheers Matty
