I've owned a 22" industrial duty Lablond lathe for almost 10 years and until today had never used it. A few months ago I ran electricity to it to see if it even ran.
This morning I needed to tram a groove into the face of a truck transmission bell housing. I thought about using a boring head on mill, but the mill is a fixed head and could not accommodate the largeness of the size allowing me to center up on the pilot bore.
SO I dug out the 18" 4 jaw from storage, over time it had gotten wet, the screws and chuck jaws were seized up[. Not having time to do a proper clean up I sprayed PB blaster on them and cheater bared them loose after mounting the 250 lb. hunk of pig iron on the lathe
Once I had the bell housing dial centered in the chuck I was concerned that due to the large diameter and the thinness of the mounting flange that it could be wrenched from the chuck if the cutter happened to gouge. The chuck has large "T" slots for dogging but I would have to make some special dogs and "T" nuts to use them. The quicker solution was to make a pair of adjustable Jay bolts.
This is what they looked like
They worked great
