The point of Japanese joinery is that the whole thing can actually hold the weight, but also be disassembled and reassembled without any other fasteners r adhesives.

Adhesives were not used much when this form was evolving, but iron spikes were, and this obviated the need for them.

It's gorgeous. A little fancy to replicate over and over as you build, but stunningly beautiful and incredibly smart.
