my guess pretty much the same as driving a wedge in with a hammer or the back side of an ax.
Just something else for a logger to have to lug around that will always have a dead battery just when you need it the most

Looks to me it is easier and safer to cut a proper hinge in the tree being felled

It would have been safer if he just notched the tree and cut it down and a whole lot quicker. He killed enough time with that toy that a little wind could have brought it back on him.

I can see where these tools can be very helpful when you have a tree leaning in the wrong direction, like toward a house. You still notch and do a hinge cut. This looks a lot safer than using 3 wedges stacked on top of each other like I have done in the past to get the tree leaning in a different direction. The other option is to bring in a bucket truck, or climb the tree and take it down piece by piece.
