    A shadoof, which this is, generally has a counterbalance weight on the short end of the beam to assist in raising the water carrier. This one seems to lack a weight; I wonder why.

    Agreed, the mechanics seem odd. The trough is barely past the pivot must be 100 pounds, holding maybe 10 gallons of water +80, the man can't weigh 140. I'm thinking camera perspective is distorting length of the upper beam; only possible counterweight? It is attached far from the pivot. He isn't really lifting it, he removes his weight and trough empties. I guess it's very close to neutral balance empty - and whoever built it wasn't guessing.
