Shortening cords this way is common; in warm climates.
If you are in single or low double digit zones, it's a bear getting undone, badly disfigured in twisted loops making it too short getting power where needed. Here abouts most use spools.

I guess I have used about every method known to man to coil roll up spool up daisy- chaining or what ever when it comes to cords ropes hoses and the like. each method has merits and faults.
Trough looping is by far my preferred method just like the flat hoses are stored on a fire engine. But not always practical for storing ropes cords and air hoses.
So a fall back method is the figure 8 over 2 posts

It occurs to me, all linear materials have different means to advantageous storage, and others for ready use. Like faking down mooring lines.

I hate when I see guys coiling an extension cord figure eight style going around their palm and then around their elbow. It is quick but after a while your cord looks like crap and ends up with weird waves in it because the figure eight shape goes against the natural twist in the cord.

Very hard to lay left, being right hand twist...double braid doesn't care. You drop the lead and lay a decent length, kicking the loops into shape at each lap, each adjacent lap UNDER the loops. Stand clear, throw eye to pier stander, but it pays out flawlessly. Good bos'un will have a turn on cleat or bitts by then, take in slack at All Stop signal.
