How to set a flat end countersink or chamfer mill at the correct depth.

Setting the depth of chamfering tools & countersinks can be a pain especially if there is not a very sharp point to work from. This video shows how to measure & calculate the depth offset for a tool. Knowing this constant offset allows for accurate countersinks & chamfers to be machined. It is a surprisingly simple formula to use once the offset for the tool is used.

The individual tool depth offset constant is referred to as k
The tool radial offset & chamfer radius are referred to as r
The chamfer width is referred to as w
These are used in the description below.

The depth for a given countersink radius r is. r-k. Yes it's that simple.

The depth for a chamfer width w is (r+w)-k. Where r is the radial offset.

The k value is individual for each tool, the tool diameter has no effect on the k value.

There is a full desription how to easily find the k value for any tool.
