How To Resaw Long Hardwood Boards And Stop Binding On Blade?

I often need to resaw very long boards from extremely hard wood.

Not only you need a powerful bandsaw motor for resawing, but you can also use a few of my tips. It will greatly improve the precision, quality and ease of your resawing jobs.

    1. Prepare the hard wood stock, by perfectly jointing and thicknessing all the sides / edges. It helps keep the blade from drifting, and produces the uniform thickness resawn boards.
    2. Fine tune the bandsaw: guide bearings. high blade tension, square the fence to the table etc
    3. Use 3mm = 1/8 inch riving "knife" 1 foot behind the blade, to prevent the hardwood longboards from binding on the blade and stalling the motor.
    4. Go SLOW, instead of the brute force pushing through the stalled situation.
    5. Retract / back off the material slightly, and attack the blade cutting edge again. It would clear the sawdust clogging the slot being cut, and also dulling the blade faster.
    6. Use levelled outfeed table, because the very long boards are obviously end heavy, especially when you are close to ending the long cut.
    7. Always use push stick or the wooden blocks to keep your fingers safe from the injury, especially as you are exiting / finishing the long cut.

After the resawing, you need to run the resawn surfaces through the thickness planer, to make the thinner boards perfectly square and flat again.

Resawing the extremely hard wood will result in the bumpy surfaces, that's perfectly normal.

    PS
For the stock preparation, especially while working with the extremely hard wood, it is very beneficial to use the helical / spiral cutter heads in the jointer and thickness planer. It produces much smoother and better surface, which is ready for the finish.

At Tiger Carpenter I use both hand and power tools. I put a lot of thought into the design and optimization. I like to come up with the improvements of the tools or jigs that are already out there, and share my ideas or findings with the community so that we all can benefit from each invention.I also implement the principle of aiming for perfection. I learn from the mistakes I made, and I raise the bar for every next project.
