A GREAT IDEA. It has a small design flaw. The roller used to "clamp" the knurling vice grips is flattening the knurl. Exchange the inner knurl wheel and the compression wheel to improve the quality a little.

The application of the vice grip to the material should be AFTER the material is rotating. This allows the knurl wheels to align better and hopefully improve the quality.
If the knurl wheels perform the clamping, then the plain wheel could be offset to move it away from the knurled surface. Possibly making the plain wheel location adjustable (in/out) may allow for a larger range of diameters.

I do LIKE the idea and it has been added to my to do list ! :-)
