Their was at least one death in Los Angeles, the '80's. Victim was a pregnant Hispanic, when a falling 9mm hit her square in the head.
I worked in a combined job shop, operators of screw machines, NC lathes, and prototype work, and a really broad ethnic mix. One young kid told about his New Year celebration, expending a couple magazines of .380 pistol skyward, in absolute confidence "they just keep going!". I reminded him with a Space Shuttle launch photo "not unless there is this much power". He couldn't believe a projectile begins deceleration just inches from a muzzle. Months later it rained, forming a puddle around a bank of drill presses. There was a small hole visible, and one of us found a .45 FMJ slug behind the machines.
In the shop entry/ reception area, the owner had an FFL and a tiny gun shop. Maybe 200 square feet, mostly hunting rifles and clientele of local shooters. This upset one employee, a middle Eastern "ohh you Americans and your guns...". That was period of attacks on Marine barracks and Beirut Embassy; tensions in the shop elevated a bit.
Precise Machine & Tool (PME), and Huntsman Sporting Goods, Adams St. Paramount CA. Probably my favorite employer.
