The USS Fitzgerald is a US Navy destroyer that was damaged in a 2017 collision with a container ship, about 10 miles off the coast of Japan. The Fitzgerald had to be transported back to Mississippi for costly repair in a shipyard. This transport is done with a heavy-lift ship, in this case the semi-submersible heavy-lift ship TransShelf. The ship takes on water to slightly sink itself below the waterline so that the damaged vessel can be loaded on.
