    I get it. It's safer this way. fyi, the shear strength of a nailgun 16d nail is 93lbs, a #6 screw shear strength is 70lbs. The beam can't be all that heavy. We don't make ladders with just nails on the stringers.

    Assuming 4 - 16d (2 on each side) nails on each "step" in that device. 4 x 93 = 372 pounds, With a support on each side, that is 744 pounds total. The beam is not nearly that heavy, they have a pretty large safety margin.

    As far as making ladders, I do some mission work in the Caribbean, they make ladders from some of the scariest things.
