Hard Rubber Jaw Liners for a Bench Vise

There are times when I need to hold stock in my bench vise and apply force parallel to the jaws. Using just steel jaws, the stock tends to slip. Hard rubber jaw liners prevent this unwanted movement. When tightly clamped, the rubber distorts around the stock while not marring it. Best of all, these liners are made from a discarded hockey puck.

They are made of hard rubber similar to tire tread.

Not sure where you live, be we live in Phoenix, AZ and there are over 5 ice rinks in the valley.

I'm in PA. I can get some of these on ebay. I think I saw a listing for 12 for $16.95 shipped.

I always thought they were some type of plastic but never actually handled one, just going by pictures. lol

I have some conveyor belt that might make good vice jaws.

Hockey pucks are good cheap material sources to have on hand. I've used them for several projects (turned in lathe with sharp HSS tools) like anti-vibration pads on machine feet, and smaller 1" wide belt grinding contact wheels.

Great idea! I live in Canada and we generally have a few extra hockey pucks kicking around. ;-) I use them mostly for sanding blocks, cut them into various shapes and find ways to make use of the circular shape for sanding in hollows etc. If you drill them here and there, they make great little tool holders for scribes, pencils and so on.

    Great idea!

I have a few that get use as bench blocks when driving out pins. Just drill holes where needed and it won't mar the finish of anything resting on it.

One of them is going to get cut up and used for this task now.

One problem left to solve with cut up hockey pucks is the surface being permanently dirty. Each time I touch it, black stuff comes off on my hands. A friend suggested I coat the surface with Go2 Glue which is flexible. Does anyone have other possible solutions?

Weird, mine aren't like that. They have hard & shiny surfaces and don't leave marks.
