I have a little Deutz T-216 gas turbine, and this is exactly how you start that thing too. The Peashooter has a much larger engine, but it's still neat to see a similar starter on a different piece of equipment.

I have always wondered myself. Best I can figure is it is turning a flywheel to store up enough energy to then transfer to the crank to overcome the compression. It seems like this would be a heavy assembly though. If I am wrong, someone please let me know.
